A Slice of Ealing by London Window Cleaners - Ncpm247.com

Ealing, London is a district in the city of London, England. This district is on the west side of London and borders Hillingdon to the west, Harrow and Brent to the north, Hammersmith and Fulham to the east and Hounslow to the south. The borough of Ealing was formed in 1965 as the result of merging the boroughs of Ealing, Southhall and Acton. There is lots of interesting information about Ealing, London that will interest any traveler on Holiday or city Break (that's vacation or weekend get-a-way for American's).

Any fan of the comedic books, The Brentford Trilogy (which has well exceeded the definition of a trilogy considering that to date there are 8 books in the series) will be rather familiar within the streets of Ealing. The series takes place in Brentford and Ealing and the author artfully brings his readers to the old English towns through the lives of a menagerie of drunken middle-aged lay bouts. These drunks face the forces of darkness in the streets of West London.

Among the interesting information about Ealing, it must be mentioned that this borough has the largest concentration of People from Polish descent. The Polish community of Ealing celebrates their polish heritage each year. This event is sponsored by the Federation of Poles in Great Britain. The festival features Polish culture with folk dancing and music, and traditional Polish dishes.

Among the interesting things about Ealing, it is neat to note that the town was originally referred to as Gillingas in the first mention of the area in 700 A. D. This name implied that the area was the "Place of the people with Gilla". The word Gilla meant servant, which could indicate that the people of this area were servants to royalty. To note there is also an Austrian singer by this name.

Archaeological evidence shows that this area has been occupied for over 7,000 years. Remnants of Iron Age materials have been discovered in the area of Horsenden hill. There is also record of a 12th century settlement in this area in the midst of a massive forest that carpeted the area. A census in 1599 lists that this area was home to 85 households. This list gave the names, ages and occupations of these original residents of the village of Ealing.

Horsenden Hill is located near Ealings border with Brent. This is the highest point in the low valley area with an elevation of 276 feet above sea level; this makes it well over 200 feet higher than the majority of the area. It was here that there was a site of an anti-aircraft battery during World War II. This battery was used as a defensive measure to protect the factories of the area.

At the south side of Horsenden hill is the Perivale Wood Bird reserve. The hill is also a great place to see views of London. It is possible in a clear day to see to Surrey, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. The hill is covered in large part by two golf courses, providing those playing golf with some great views.

St. Mary's church is one of the oldest structures in the entire city of London and dates back to the 12th century. The church parish consisted of manors that controlled farms that harvested several different types of crops and also tended to livestock. The church opened the Great Ealing School in 1698 and eventually became known as the finest private school in England. Among its famous students was William Gilbert, the composer of comedic operas.

William Gilbert worked in collaboration with Arthur Sullivan and together they formed the famous team Gilbert and Sullivan. These men were responsible for such famous productions as H. M. S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and the Mikado. Many of their productions continue to be performed in modern times by theaters and college and high school theater departments around the world. It was from one of their productions that the world received the famous saying "What, never! Well, hardly ever!!"

Another famous student was Cardinal Newman. The cardinal was a major figure involved in the Oxford movement and his studies eventually led to his writing many influential documents including the Grammar of Assent. He has been considered for sainthood, if he was to be canonized he would be the first saint to live after the 17th century. The area of Ealing became greatly populated in the turn of the 20th century and the school closed in 1908.

Ealing now houses many interesting structures that provide as tourist attraction to the borough. One of the more popular structures is the Pitzhangher Manor. This manor house's current structure is greatly changed from the original structure that was erected prior to the 19th century. The home was modified by the architect and owner John Soane in 1800 to 1810. This manor is now a museum that displays exhibits dedicated to Soanes designs.

Other interesting information about Ealing includes the lives some of some of its more famous sons and daughters. Among the famous sons and daughters are famous individuals such as the comedian Arthur Hayes, the writer Frank Richards, the singer Dusty Springfield and the writer of the famous novel Tom Jones Henry Fielding.

One of the most famous citizens of Ealing was the world famous singer Pete Townsend. Pete was raised in the area and attended the Ealing Art School. He is known for many major hits such as let my love open the door, and Slit Skirts. Pete was the lead performer for the band The Who. He is perhaps one of the most gifted members of Rock and Roll. He not only wrote over 100 songs, many of which have been big hits for himself, but he also plays the guitar, drums, banjo, and many other instruments.

Many British rock bands have gotten their start in Ealing including the Rolling Stones. Many now famous bands have played in venues in the borough including the Ealing Jazz Club. The Ealing Jazz club has seen the introduction of several world famous performers including Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart and Manfred Mann.
