The History Of Hammersmith And Fulham, brought to you by Ncpm247.com

The district of Hammersmith and Fulham is located in West London and considered part of inner London. This district has a large influx of corporate office for major corporations. The history of Hammersmith and Fulham is marked with 100 years of urban redevelopment.

In 1965 the separate boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham were merged and were known as the London borough of Hammersmith until 1979. It was at this time that they became known by their current name.

Hammersmith is considered the urban center of the borough and is one of the key transport hubs and commercial centers in all of London. This commerce and transportation is as a result of the two London Underground stations. Fulham is to the south of Hammersmith and sits next to Chiswick. Hammersmith is linked to Barnes by the way of the Hammersmith Bridge.

The Hammersmith Bridge crosses the river Thames and provides a thoroughfare for transportation and pedestrians across the river to Barnes. This 700 foot bridge is the second permanent bridge that has been built on this site. This suspension bridge was built in 1887 and is one of the proud architectural accomplishments of the borough.

The plans for the current bridge were approved by Parliament in 1824 and construction began the following year. However as transportation increased in the 1870's the bridge was further supported to accommodate for the increased usage. The current bridge was opened in June 1887 and has been refurbished numerous times since then.

One of the more recognized moments of history for the bridge was on December 27th 1919. It was on this date that Lt. Charles Campobell Wood, an airman in the RAF dove from the bridge into the river to save the life of a drowning woman. Wood managed to save the woman but lost his own life as a result of Tetanus which was a complication of his injuries. There is a plaque on the bridge that pays tribute to the memory of Lt. Charles Wood.

In more recent times the bridge had been damaged by a Real IRA bomb that was planted underneath the spans along the Barnes end of the bridge. This was not the first time the bridge had been the victim of terrorist destruction. There was an attempt in 1939 by the IRA to destroy the bridge that was foiled by a local resident who was walking across the bridge when he noticed smoke. He managed to open the bomb and threw it into the river. This was one of two devices that had been planted. As a result of this quick action only one section of the bridge was damaged rather than the total destruction of the bridge.

Historically the borough dates back to the Roman and Saxon times and was documented in the survey of King William I in the 11th century. This survey is known as the Domes Day book and has been the source of community history for 1000 years. As a result of being cited in the Domes day Book there was residential and industrial development.

Since Hammersmith is at the center of a confluence of major transportation artery's it is the center of activity including the major commercial district known as the Broadway Centre. This area is the home of several shops, an office complex, and a London Underground (London's subway) station.

Fulham makes up the second half of this borough and its history makes up a large part of the historical interest that occupies this area. Fulham was originally the location for the center of the Fulham and Gibraltar diocese and is the location of the Fulham Palace. The Palace which was once the home of the Bishop of London.

Fulham is now one of the most highly respected areas of residency in London. The Savills 2007 list of prime London areas included Fulham on its list of top properties.

A large portion of Fulhams history evolved around the manor, which was believed to be given to Bishop Erkenwald around 691 A. D.. Erkenwald was the heir of the Offa family fortune but he surrender his birth rights and all the money that went along with it to establish two abbeys. He eventually became the bishop of London and made some major contributions to the church and the evolution of Anglo-Saxon charters.

The manor was passed along from Erkenhald to his successors and in 1141 the current Bishop of London was lodging there when Geoffrey de Madeville took him prisoner. Madeville was a rebel and bandit under the rule of King Stephen of England. During this period there was contention between King Stephen and Empress Matilda. These two individuals competed for the throne ofEngland and Madeville was one of King Stephens's major supporters and rebels.

Fulham was the winter hideout for Danish invaders in 879. These Danish invaders were traveling up the Thames when they decided to winter in Fulham and Hammersmith. Another moment of historical significance for this area was an event that took place in 1642 when the Earl of Essex made a makeshift bridge out of boats to get the river and march his army in pursuit of King Charles I.

It was believed that King Charles was in pursuit of absolute power and his actions of raising taxes and taking other actions without the consent of Parliament caused concern. King Charles was king of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1625 until he was executed. The end of his reign was during the English civil war. It was during this civil war that he fought against English and Scottish Parliaments and the Puritans. He lost the civil war but he remained defiant and provoked the second Civil war and a second defeat. At this point he was tried, convicted and executed for high treason. It was during the first civil war that the make-shift boat was created and the Earl of Essex marched against King Charles.

During the 18th century Fulham gained a reputation as a location of lewd behavior. It became the Las Vegas of London for the wealthy. This debauchery consisted of gambling and prostitution. This lifestyle has given way to modern day Fulham and the influx of the super wealthy of London.

Need To Know Why Residential Window Cleaners In Fulham Are In Such Short Demand?
by David Sheen

Window cleaning services were traditionally one or two man operations which cleaned the windows in a certain area. These people were well known in the areas that they worked and it was possible to build up quite a large window cleaning round. Today things are very different and these small businesses have somewhat faded away. In areas such as Fulham there are few residential window cleaners around with most of the businesses focusing on commercial jobs. However do you know why residential window cleaners in Fulham are in such short demand?

Many people think there is less need for residential window cleaners at the present time. This has lead to window cleaners either giving up their jobs or joining larger companies. These will then only take on commercial clients.

By only taking on commercial jobs a window cleaning business will stand to make considerably more money. Not only can commercial jobs be higher paying they can also be more straightforward and sometimes one job can take all day.

As a result of this window cleaners in the Fulham area in particular are turning more towards commercial jobs and away from residential jobs. All businesses rely on revenue to continue, so it makes business sense to lean towards the higher paying jobs.

Residential households find this shift towards commercial window cleaning quite inconvenient. They find that securing the services of a window cleaner virtually impossible. These are the households that either have to clean their own windows or simply leave them.

There are a few reasons why residential window cleaners in Fulham are in such short supply, but the main reason is money. Companies will opt to take on higher paying jobs rather than lots of individual residential jobs which leaves home owners without a means to clean their windows.
