Shepherd's Bush, located in the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, is a district of West London about five miles west of Charing Cross. Although mainly a residential area, any information about Shepherd's Bush in London today would have to include the newer Westfield shopping complex of Shepherd's Bush Green, having the distinction of being the biggest enclosed urban mall in all of Europe.
Shepherd's Bush Green is bound by Goldhawk Road, Uxbridge Road and Shepherd's Bush Road. Acton is to the west, with Shepherd's Bush being north of Hammersmith, east of Holland Park and on the south of White City.
There is actually very little that is known of the Shepherd's Bush area before it was recorded as being purchased by the Bishop of London, in AD 704, as part the manor of Fulham that included what is now the Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham. However, there is evidence that the area was inhabited as far back to pre-Roman times.
The first record of the use of the name "Shepherd's Bush" was in 1635 and it is commonly thought to have come from the presence of shepherds and their herds on their way to the Smithfield market. It is said they had used the common land as a frequent resting point and grazing stop, although this is more speculation than a documented fact.
It is known, however, that the central park area, Shepherd's Bush Common, at one time was regularly used to graze cattle in the days when London ended at Piccadilly. The remaining eight acre triangular area of open grass, surrounded by trees and shops, is now the focal point of activity in the Shepherd's Bush district.
In 1701, Shepherd's Bush was noted for having a large gallows installed at the eastern end of the Common where today, a giant barometer now stands in its place. That particular spot is still commonly called Gallows Corner.
Charles Dickens also was a part of the history of Shepherd's Bush when he announced a plan to build a rehabilitation center for prostitutes there in 1846. He was a strong supporter of the home for many years, known as Urania.
More recently, Shepherd's Bush was host to the fourth modern Olympic Games in 1908 at a specially designed, 68,000 seat stadium next to the White City exhibition center.
Today Shepherd's Bush has become a lively and vibrant center of diverse culture and is notable for a wide array of ethnic multicultural restaurants, varied night life, shops, cinemas and venues for popular live music. In fact, everything from Bluegrass and Jazz to European Electro and Hip Hop are represented here.
A large number of small independently owned shops, pubs and restaurants can be found in West 12, a smaller shopping area on the south side around Goldhawk Road and Askew Road. Shepherd's Bush, is also the home of the Queen's Park Rangers football club on Loftus Road.
Shepherd's Bush has a number of links to fame and notoriety, being the home of the BBC. Its television center is on Wood Lane in the sub-district of White City. Shepherd's Bush was also well known as the fictional home of Steptoe & Son, a situation comedy popular in the U. S. As well as Great Britain and around the world.
The national home of BBC Television, Television Center is also here and is the operating center for the world famous BBC TV and radio news, the BBC web site and numerous TV broadcasts. Many comedy sketches from the BBC's celebrated Monty Python's Flying Circus series were shot in locations in Shepherd's Bush because of its close proximity to the BBC Television Center.
In fact, Shepherd's Bush claims ties to a great many entertainment landmarks. Near the Westfield shopping area at White City, the Dimco buildings were used as the location in the film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" as the Acme Factory.
The Shepherd's Bush's Empire theatre has been a music venue for over one hundred years, having played host to some very popular acts that include the likes of Bob Dylan, Phish, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, The Wildhearts, David Bowie and The Rolling Stones, among many others who have appeared there over the years. The members of three very influential British Rock bands, the Who, the Clash and the Sex Pistols, are originally from Shepherd's Bush.
The Empire also hosted hundreds of television broadcasts over the years.
Although often ignored by some as an oddity, many people feel Shepherd's Bush is a genuine expression of what London is truly all about. The eclectic offerings and diversity of activities have inspired some people to call it the New Notting Hill, without the price tag, referring to an upscale area of London with similar, though more expensive, aspects.
There are many who claim the area achieved such great popularity simply because it is easy to get to, which indeed, it very well is.
The Shepherd's Bush common is a main hub with four major roads radiating from the green and three more streets intersecting on the east, converging at the Holland Park roundabout. This is also an important stop for the local bus network, with thirteen total bus routes at this location. A new station is located on Uxbridge Road. It can also be reached by four of London's underground stations
Of course, Shepherd's Bush has the largest urban shopping center in Europe. Developed by the Westfield Group, the immense complex was opened in 2008 on the former site of the Franco-British Exhibition of 1908. The shopping utopia covers a massive 43 acre area and includes over 265 shops and 50 eateries of every type imaginable. The center also boasts 4000 parking spots & around 600 bicycle racks.
The stores at Westfield have been generally praised for covering the entire scope of shopping range. Shops from over 15 countries supply everything from designer to budget brands. The shops normally open it each day at 10:00 am with the restaurants beginning business about an hour earlier.
As the district continues to grow, there will certainly be more information about Shepherds Bush in London to come in the years ahead.
